Section 2(a) of the Act defines agriculture broadly. It includes all activities related to the listed items, whether for remuneration or not. The list below follows the Act’s wording. It is inclusive, not a closed list.

Under the Act, agriculture includes crop cultivation, seed production, animal husbandry, poultry, dairy farming, livestock rearing, apiculture, fodder cultivation, bee-keeping, fishing, aquaculture, sericulture, vermiculture, horticulture, floriculture, mushroom cultivation, agro-forestry, use of land for grazing or rab-manure, all types of composting, and any other farming activity carried out through self-employment. It also covers tenurial cultivation, share-cropping and shifting cultivation, and the collection, use and sale of minor or non-timber forest produce by virtue of ownership or usufructuary rights.

Section 2(d) also covers primary processing and value addition to raw agricultural and animal produce, and labour and pastoral work. The cards below show each activity with the Act section it relies on.
